Overview - P & I and Risk Management Course
(via the TMI Distance Learning Programme)
Tolani Maritime Institute, through the Distance Learning Centre, has developed a course on Risk Management, Loss Prevention and the operation of P&I clubs.
The course consists of modules on subjects such as the history of Protection & Indemnity clubs, the development of the international group of clubs and its effect on mutual insurance.
Main Objectives
The course modules are designed to provide officers with an understanding of Risk Management, Loss Prevention and the functioning of P & I Clubs.
- The modules go into details of the club rules relating to class I cover for P&I, class II cover for Freight Demurrage and Defence and miscellaneous covers for other special trades provided by the various clubs and Insurance Companies
- The course besides providing knowledge of risk covered under P&I include modules on pollution, its legal background, claims and preventive measures. In addition similar treatment is given to legal aspects of carriage of cargoes and the P&I cover for cargo claims arising under various heads
- A Separate module explains the clubs letter of security and its implications in general and the treatment given by the clubs to the stowaways and refugees
- Each of the modules ends with Self-assessment questions so that the student can assess his own learning level
Course Material
The course material provides the basic study modules on main subject and a number of resource modules which are also written in the same learning process. These modules include aspects of Marine Insurance Act, Institute clauses, contract of affreightment & charter parties, loss prevention measures for third party claims and cargo claims. These modules also provide supporting material for students.
A CD containing all the International convention relating to insurance, liability etc is provided to the student in order that he does not have to surf the web for Text of conventions, club rules and other useful data.
Courseware shall include the printed modules – two books and the following resource material:
- One CD containing legal conventions, Rules of various clubs, Masters guide to P&I by the Standard club, various guides issued by the Gard and other clubs
- A Nautical Institute book on Mariner’s Role in Collecting Evidence
- A Nautical Institute book on Managing Risk in Shipping
- A Nautical Institute book on Commercial Management for Shipmasters
Course Duration and Evaluation:
The course is of six months duration wherein a student is required to put in about 6-8 hours of study per week. The students shall be required to submit at least four assignments or submit answers to the questions given in the hand book and appear for examination consisting of two papers of three-hour duration each at the end of six months. On completion of the both the assignments (carrying 50% weightage) and the examination (carrying 50% weightage) the student shall be considered successful on achieving 50% of the overall marks.
Every successful student shall be issued a Course Certificate by Tolani Maritime Institute, Mumbai.
Eligibility
The holder of a Certificate of Competency issued by Government of India OR a graduate in any discipline with two years experience in a shipping related company is eligible for admission to this course.
Course Fees
The course fee, including courseware and counseling, shall be Rs 12,500 (Rupees Twelve Thousand Five Hundred only).
