Salient Features - B. S. Nautical Sciences (via the TMI Distance Learning Programme)
- The entire degree programme runs over duration
of eight semesters (A to H), each of six months.
- All cadets completing the Pre-Sea Course (approved
by D G Shipping) are eligible to join Phase I (Semesters A, B & C) of the programme.
- Phase
I of the programme runs as SSTP. The process of SSTP takes into account carrying out
of tasks as specified in the Cadet Record Book (CRB) in a planned manner (a requirement
of D G Shipping). The practical work is supported by underpinning knowledge, which also
prepares you for your COC.
- In Phase II (Semesters D to H) of the programme, a student undertakes
the study of modules prepared for the functional subjects of the Certificate of Competency
as Mates & Masters and adds valuable
knowledge in subjects such as management, communication and maritime legislation.
- Courseware is specially
designed for the Distance Learning Programme and includes selected textbooks published
by the Nautical Institute, UK, the Gard P&I Club and specially commissioned authors.
Conduct of the Programme
- CRB tasks and modules planned for Phase I semesters are to be completed on board the
ship and the student is assessed on a continuous basis through submission of technical
journals and periodical tests.
- Students are encouraged to complete the Phase I semesters
in 18 months (the shortest possible time) and commence studies for the Phase II immediately,
while they are still completing the sea service required (presently 24 months) for
Second Mate's COC.
- During Phase II, a student is required to be employed in the Merchant navy
and has to provide proof of having a minimum of 12 months sea service during that time.
A student is free to follow his own study plan while serving at sea, on leave or when
preparing for his competency examinations. He, however, is required to complete a semester
in a maximum of eight months.
- In Semester D, E and F, a student continues studies in the functional
subject to the management level (Mates & Masters) and also other subjects such
as Marine Power Plants, Maritime Legislation, Technical Communications and, Principles
of Management.
- Semester
G takes the technical studies one level up to basic management subjects such as:
- Mathematical Techniques for Nautical Sciences
- Commercial Management,
- Financial Management,
- Human Resource Management,
- Management of Risk through Marine Insurance and P&I Clubs.
- In Semester H, a student
is required to present a project after due study and research. A faculty or a guide
shall need to be identified by the student and approved by the Institute.
