Careers for a Marine Engineering Graduate

A marine engineer progresses along his / her career path by periodically undergoing examinations conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Surface Transport, Government of India. Certain minimum levels of sea service time are required before appearing for these examinations. In addition, a limited number of modular courses and preparatory courses have to be taken.

Seafaring Junior Engineer and Third Engineer

A student completing the four year marine engineering degree at TMI is exempt from the Class IV - Part A examination conducted by Directorate General of Shipping and will be eligible for appointment as a Junior Engineer Officer on merchant navy ships. A Junior Engineer on a ship receives emoluments of about Rs. 30,000 per month with free boarding and lodging while signed on board the vessel.

A Junior Engineer is required to sail for only six months before he/she is eligible to appear in the Class IV - Part B examination conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping. After successfully completing this examination, a Junior Engineer becomes qualified to sail as Watch Keeping Engineer Officer on a merchant ship.

Seafaring Second Engineer and Chief Engineer

The next step is that of a Second Engineer and ultimately that of a Chief Engineer on a ship. With promotions come substantial improvements in remuneration. A Chief Engineer at sea receives Rs. 1,50,000 per month or more net of taxes. It takes about 6-7 years for a Junior Engineer Officer to get elevated to the rank of Chief Engineer, depending on individual capabilities and job opportunities available.

Shore Based Mechanical or Electrical Engineers

A TMI graduate Marine Engineer is equipped not only for a career at sea but for any position that demands a mechanical or electrical engineer. Typically marine engineers are sought by hospitals, hotels and industries that are associated with engines, boilers, hydraulic systems or process control machinery.
