Maritime job for girls!! People used to raise their eyebrows. Maritime sector was mainly male dominated profession till recently. Now with the advent of Globalisation and Liberalisation policies of the government has changed the perspective about maritime sector placement records also, however small it is. Now manning agenicies, parents and whole society changing, even though slowly. Girl cadets have proved their mettle at their training institutes and hiring companies also. They are working at par with their male counterparts.
The seminar held at Tolani Maritime Institute, Talegaon on 13th March 2008 was one of its kinds to try and search for some of the questions frequently raised by all maritime related agencies. The seminar was well represented by all spectrum of Marine professionals.
The welcome address by Dr. (Mrs.) Sujata Naik-Tolani, Vice Chairperson, TMI Governing Council perfectly set the ball to roll on the idea of Women in Shipping. She mentioned about how women have thrived in all spheres of life and profession to proved their excellence. She was quite pleased to bring it to the notice of audience, shipping industry, which is a male dominated profession by tradition has given a chance to women cadets.
Ms. Sharvani Mishra addressed the seminar as a girl cadet of Pioneer batch of TMI and shared her experiences to work in the shipping industry as sailor herself.
Many stalwarts from the Shipping industry like Mrs. Aruna Kulshreshtha, CEO Karmahom Conference (IPBCC), Capt. Jairam, Director, Seaarland Shipping & Chairman, MASSA, Capt. Hiranandani, Marine Consultant, Chevron Manning Services and Mrs. Firoza Bhot, Vice President, Wilco Ship Management and Travels Pvt. Ltd all contributed to the theme of the Seminar.
Mrs. Kiran Dhingra, Director General of Shipping, Govt. of India, delivering her keynote address, appealed to all stake holders of the industry to be open to the idea of recruiting more girl cadets and to give up the apprehensions related to gender issues regarding the suitability of girls for an arduous career. She advised girl cadets to get into management jobs and also shore based jobs.
A panel discussion was arranged to make the seminar more interactive where in the the panelists included Mrs. Kiran Dhingra, Mrs. Anu Aga, Director Thermax Ltd, Vice Admiral (Retd) A. S. Krishnan, Mrs. Jyotsna Deshpande, Chairperson, The Institution of Engineers, Pune and Mr. Vijay Handa, VP Reliance Shipping discussed various issues and was well moderated by Capt, S. G. Deshpande of TMI. |

We are happy to announce that Tolani Education Foundation (TEF) has signed an agreement with the Department of Economics (DOE), University of Mumbai on 22nd November 2007 for an academic collaboration towards the purpose of offering post-graduate certificate / diploma / training courses / programmes in the transport and related sectors to meet a long standing need expressed by the industry.
The agreement was signed by Dr. K. Venkatramani, the Registrar of the University of Mumbai & Dr. Romar Correa, the Director of DOE on behalf of the University and Dr GS Shahani on behalf of TEF.
The DOE is an autonomous Department of the University of Mumbai and conducts M.A. and Ph.D. programmes at their Kalina Campus. While Tolani Maritime Institute under the management of the Tolani Education Foundation conducts two degree programmes in Marine Engineering and Nautical Technology at it’s campus in Induri near Talegaon, Pune in addition to conducting the Distance Learning Programmes in Nautical Sciences at Andheri (East), Mumbai.
The Programmes will be conducted by Tolani Maritime Institute at it’s premises at Andheri (East) jointly with DOE, University of Mumbai.
To begin with, it is planned to conduct a Post Graduate Diploma programme in Transportation and logistics from 01 Mar 08. This programme has been designed to meet the growing needs of the Transportation and Logistics Industry especially towards meeting the need of the DOOR TO DOOR service which is a widely accepted concept throughout the world.
The programme aims to provide a thorough knowledge of the logistics and supply chain management involved in transportation of all modes; viz; road, rail, sea and air including handling & storage of goods at transit warehouses. The programmes also covers basic legislative knowledge governing the various modes of transport, communication and IT skills which are the vital factors required for the global transportation Industry.
On successful completion of the programme, students will be awarded Diplomas.
The detailed brochure containing brief syllabus, eligibility criteria, fees structure, etc, will be made available by Mid Dec 07. |

An astonishing achievement record has been created at TMI in placing its students.
In campus based selections, as of 15 May 2007, all eligible Marine Engineering students attaining their graduation degree in Aug 2007 have been placed.
In addition, all eligible Marine Engineering students of present III Year Batch (Class of 2008) have also received internship / placement offers.
Shipping companies are now scheduled to visit the campus in June 2007 to interview Marine Engineering students of the current II Year Batch (Class of 2009) and select them for their scholarship schemes.
Shell Ship Management has even recruited students even from the First Year of the program.
On the Nautical Technology side, all the students of the Nautical Technology of present IV Year Batch (Class of 2007) are already onboard the ships.
All eligible students of Nautical Technology of present III Year Batch (Class of 2008) are in possession of internship / placement offer letters.
In addition to this, 75% of Nautical Technology II Year Batch students, scheduled to start sailing for internship in the mid 2008, have received offer letters.
Amongst the recruiting companies at TMI, are some of the world’s best shipping companies with established record of safety and good commercial performance.
Thanks to the booming shipping trade across the globe, the demand for qualified seafarers is on the rise and the shipping companies are coming forward with innovative schemes to attract talent. Furthermore, ship building yards the world over are full of new orders till 2015 which lays an emphasis on the bright future for the seafarers.
Right time to get in – Prospects have never been better, for those who have the will to succeed and put in the requisite efforts.

Tolani Maritime Institute (TMI) organized first alumni meet at C.K.Nayudu Banquet Hall CCI Churchgate, Mumbai on 09 Jun 2007. It was very much evident that TMI shares a strong bond with its past students .A large gathering of past students were proud enough to participate in the meeting with full vigour. TMI has
produced hundreds of quality seafarers sailing across the globe and has made significant difference to the quality of manpower in marine world. It was right occasion for all of them to come together to share their nostalgia, experience and enjoy the moment to discover how TMI has grown with time. During the interaction with
faculty members they agreed how TMI has changed their personality and lives
to face the life at sea.
“All alumni of institute are important members of TMI community and are real
flag bearers of TMI for their juniors” said Mr.B.K.Saxena, Principal TMI and
also said “with your proven skills, dedication and commitment you can really pave the
way for your juniors, so to keep TMI and Indian flag high and fluttering”
Beaming Captain Razdan Provost, TMI said “It is the proud moment for TMI to
conduct alumni meet and to know and acknowledge that products of TMI have been well received in the
Shipping community and are doing great jobs for their respective companies”. He also
suggested how the feed back and inputs from members can help to evolve and
set a curriculum meeting the demands of the Industry so that TMI continues to provide to current students
what is required by the Industry.
Mr. D.D. Mundhra, Mr. I.K. Basu, Program Chair, Marine Engineering and Mr.
Sanjeet Kanungo senior faculty of TMI also insisted on how the exchange of
ideas is essential and could be useful between past and present students to
build the gap in rapid change of technology.
Ms. Anjali Deshpande compered the meet. Mr. Kushal Chotrani, Second Engineer (Class of 2002 ) thanked all on behalf of Alumni. Mr.Nikhil Chandok (Class of 2002) was unanimously nominated as the Coordinator for the next
