News & Views - The TMI-BITS DLC Newsletter
March 2006 Issue 01/2006
Vision of Captain P.S. Barve, the Course Co-Coordinator
Continuous professional development of the students is one of the key objectives of our Institute. This "News & Views" has been one of the links of the institute in disseminating know how and updating the students with the affairs of the Institute.
With innovation in mind, we recently conducted a survey of our Phase II students studying in Semesters D, E and F. It was observed that most of these students join the degree course immediately after successfully obtaining their 2nd Mates COC but pursue their studies for the BITS Degree only after their Phase I & II courses in a nautical college are completed.
Obviously including 'Functions material for Mates & Masters' in our Phase I & II courseware duplicates the efforts of students. A suggestion has therefore been received that the courseware be redesigned. While redesigning the courseware TMI may include aspects of ship operation, cargo work and navigation that adds advanced knowledge, which would be of benefit to the students in their future career at the management level.
We have certain ideas but our readers may have more of them and we would welcome
them.
TMI, Mumbai has carved a niche of it’s own in spreading maritime education through “Distance
Learning Mode”. TMI after successful implementation of the diploma and
the degree programme is now in the process of developing other such programmes. One
of the first industry related programme which shall be introduced in April 06 is the
Distance learning course on the P&I clubs.
All our students are aware of the importance of the P&I clubs to the shipping industry.
Besides functioning as a mutual insurer for its members, its contribution to making the
industry aware of risk management, loss prevention and safety programme has been invaluable
to the industry in general and to the seafarer in particular.
However, beyond what we know of the P&I club through its surveyors and correspondents,
there is a lot that is not understood and therefore not made effective use of. The course
that TMI has designed is intended to provide the personnel working in the industry, seafarers
at sea and any person interested in loss prevention, with the knowledge of this intricate
machinery which seems to run from 20 th February of each year to the next but still keeps
tabs on the years gone by to ensure that the interest of their members is protected.
The course shall be launched in the third week of April and an official announcement
in respect thereof shall be made on 28 th March 06.
The course shall be conducted in Distance learning mode and shall be so designed that
the students shall be able to complete the assignment required in six months. The students
shall be assisted by faculty and a contact class shall be held for about 5 days at the
beginning of the course.
Details of the course shall be available on the www.tolani.edu on
28 th March 06 for admissions to the first course starting on 21 st of April 06.

About Distance Learning: by Capt Balbir Garia
Distance Learning meets the challenge of matching the best practices in education to train
human resources without the compulsion of physically bringing together students and teachers.
This goes beyond the realm of correspondence courses, which merely serve to deliver study material
and unsophisticated evaluation components to students.
In the maritime context, DLP as run by TMI facilitates the fusion of theoretical learning
and real world practicality for shipboard training.
Capt Balbir Garia speaks:
Personally, I found that the TMI - BITS Distance Learning provides a wonderful opportunity for the seafarers to complete their graduation in continuation with seagoing carrier. What makes it unique from regular distance learning programmes is the dedication and commitment of TMI faculty for continuous interaction with their student, individual personal evaluation during leave periods and timely advice on the lapses notices in tasks and assignments. The concept of introducing management studies in the 7th semester and project work followed by the presentation in final semester is exceptional.
Presentation of Project by Final Semester Student
Captain Balbir Garia, Final Semester Student (Semester H), presented the project to Board of Examiners on report on 9th of January 2006 for final assessment. The topic for his Research Project was "Liquefied Natural Gas - LNG Overview, Commercial Viability & Shipping Economics". He carried out the research at Hongkong under the guidance of Mr. Kishore Rajvanshy, the Managing Director Fleet Management Ltd and Mr. Dilip Nair - General Manager (Technical) of Fleet Management Ltd.
The Board of Examiners consisted of Capt. Ashok Khanna G.M, S.C.I and Capt P Chandna as External Examiners. Captain A.V. Potnis and Captain B. Puri of TMI, Mumabi assisted him with all the support material and acted as Internal Examiners. The presentation was attended by the TMI faculty.
The presentation was appreciated by the Board of Examiners for its depth of research and coverage of the subject. We are happy to inform our readers that Capt Balbir Garia was awarded "Excellent" grade in the Project and was declared eligible for BS degree to be awarded by BITS, Pilani.
At the end Capt PS Barve, the Course Co-coordinator congratulate the student on his being successful in the Degree Programme and expressed his gratitude to the guides and the examiners for giving their invaluable time.

Stress Management
The art of reducing the quantity of thoughts and improving the quality of thoughts is called stress management. The mind, which plays tricks with us, which creates fear, fantasies, anxieties, tension, worries, highs, lows, is to be tamed, controlled and disciplined. The art of doing this is called mind management and when you have controlled the mind where are the fears, worries, tensions, etc. In addition, when these disappear where is the stress.
