The Tolani Group has nearly three and half decades of experience in the shipping industry and they presently operate a fleet of seven modern bulk carriers.

The Tolani Group has had a long standing commitment to the field of education. Numerous Tolani educational institutes that offer courses in Commerce, Management and Information Technology in both Mumbai and Pune, all bear evidence to the accumulated expertise of the Tolani Group in education. TMI also runs a Distance Learning Programmes in Nautical Sciences. To date, this Programme has been utilised by nearly 1,000 students from 80 ship-owning and ship-management companies.

To achieve the standards and excellence of a world class institute, TMI has collaborated with BITS, Pilani, one of the most prominent engineering institutes in India. Indeed, the Bachelor's degree earned by students at TMI is awarded by BITS, Pilani.

Academics

1 How rigorous is the study programme at TMI?

TMI's education is intense, difficult and rigorous. In our selection process, we make the best attempt to identify students who can cope up with the numerous academic, co-curricular and extracurricular activities that form part of our study programme.

2 What career opportunities are offered by a Marine Engineering degree other than a career as a merchant mariner?

In addition to providing students with a platform to become world class marine engineers, the degree programme also opens up numerous other opportunities. The students are schooled in the various aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering, providing them with numerous opportunities in shore based industrial companies. With a B. S. degree in Marine Engineering or Nautical Technology, a student may go on to pursue post graduation courses including an MBA.

3 How is the Internship Programme different from normal field visits?

Normal field visits are short term in nature and do not actively involve the students. The Internship Program however is spread over a period of 22 weeks and actively involves the student in the regular work of the recruiting organisation. We believe that this 22-week time frame is essential to make the industry experience more complete and comprehensive.

Careers

1 What are the job prospects for marine engineers?

After four years of Marine Engineering education at the Tolani Maritime Institute, a student will be eligible for appointment as a Junior Engineer Officer on merchant ships. A Junior Engineer presently receives emoluments of about RS 30,000 per month. Free boarding, lodging and food is provided while living / working onboard. A Junior Engineer is required to sail for at least six months before he/she is eligible to appear in the Class IV Part B examination being conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping.

After successfully completing this examination, the engineer becomes qualified to sail as Watch Keeping Engineer Officer on a merchant ship with a higher salary.

2 Is seafaring the only option for a TMI engineer?

No. The marine engineering curriculum covers all the core elements of a Mechanical Engineering programme with additional emphasis on particular equipment and systems that find applications in ships. It also contains substantial elements of electrical engineering topics. With this preparation, the TMI graduate engineer is equipped not only for a career at sea but is well prepared for any position that requires a Mechanical or Electrical engineer. Industries that are associated with engines, boilers, hydraulic systems or process control machinery among others can amply utilise the skills of a marine engineer.

For those who desire to study further, the degree provides a solid foundation for advanced studies in engineering or MBA programmes.
