Internship Programme Onboard ships

1 Internship on board ships would involve substantial ravelling costs for signing on/off. Who will bear this cost?

The students will reimburse the employing company the cost of an economy class seamen's air fare to / from the ports of embarkation / disembarkation. The institute will take full responsibility for collecting this amount from the students and making payments to the employing companies.

For reasons of practicality, it is recommended that employing companies bear the cost of a modest stipend of USD 150 per month to be paid to the intern for incidental expenses. However, some companies may decide to pay a higher stipend in keeping with their standard practices.

2 Will the intern's presence not affect regular work on board the ship?

The objective of the Internship Programme is to familiarise the student with various aspects of shipboard machinery and equipment by carrying out regular shipboard work as assigned to him / her by the Chief Engineer and Second Engineer.

As a trainee engineer in their final year of study, interns will come having received training for three years in all the components of marine engineering and pre-sea STCW modular courses as well as relevant components of mechanical and electrical engineering. The trainee engineer will prove to be an asset to the ship and the Chief Engineer.

3 Does a trainee engineer have the requisite travel documents including a passport and CDC?

All the students will have passports to enable them to travel overseas. The Directorate General of Shipping issues TMI interns with appropriate CDCs specifically for the purpose of the Internship Programme.
