The Institute

1 Who are the promoters of TMI? What is their expertise in education in general and maritime education in particular?

TMI has been promoted by the Tolani Education Foundation, a part of the Tolani Group, in collaboration with the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.

The Tolani Group has nearly three and half decades of experience in the shipping industry and they presently operate a fleet of seven modern bulk carriers.

The Tolani Group has had a long standing commitment to the field of education. Numerous Tolani educational institutes that offer courses in Commerce, Management and Information Technology in both Mumbai and Pune, all bear evidence to the accumulated expertise of the Tolani Group in education. TMI also runs a Distance Learning Programmes in Nautical Sciences. To date, this Programme has been utilised by nearly 1,000 students from 80 ship-owning and ship-management companies.

To achieve the standards and excellence of a world class institute, TMI has collaborated with BITS, Pilani, one of the most prominent engineering institutes in India. Indeed, the Bachelor's degree earned by students at TMI is awarded by BITS, Pilani.

2 What kind of resources have been dedicated to development of the Institute?

The Tolani Group and Tolani Education Foundation have allocated significant resources to develop the Institute. To date, total capital investment of Rs. 250 million has been made and Tolani Shipping Limited, the ship-owning arm of the Tolani Group offers approximately Rs. 1 million every year in the form of scholarships to top students.

The above investment is only a first step. The Tolani Group will continue to work towards their stated goal of making TMI a complete Maritime University of global repute.

Infrastructure at TMI, Induri

1 TMI is located in a remote area. Are there proper educational facilities available for the children of faculty members?

There are various schools with classes upto Std. X in and around Talegaon. The Institute will make arrangements for transportation of the children who attend these schools.

TMI is around 40 kms from Pune, a city with strong educational traditions and home to numerous prominent colleges, technical and professional training institutes, research establishments and a prestigious University. Pune is often referred as the Oxford of the East.

2 Are proper housing and other facilities available for the faculty members?

There is separate, excellent housing available on campus for faculty members. In addition, faculty members and their families may utilise the wide range of sports facilities on the campus including a swimming pool, squash, tennis, badminton and basketball courts, a large playing field and a well equipped gymnasium. Prospective faculty members are invited to visit our campus and see these facilities.

1 What are the growth opportunities at TMI?

TMI is an dynamic and growing educational institute, and is working towards becoming a world class university for maritime education. We welcome faculty members to become partners in achieving this goal. In addition to teaching, TMI is also planning to take up research and consultancy projects from the industry. TMI is also exploring options whereby faculty members can pursue higher education and research at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.
