FAQs - TMI-BITS Distance Learning Programme

1 How would a Degree help me?

The BS programme for nautical officers is designed to achieve two goals:

  • Develop skills and competence for carrying out the shipboard duties.
  • Develop awareness of the industry in general and provide specific opportunity to study quality, commercial, legal, operational and financial aspects of our industry.

These additional inputs and the opportunity to work in the industry (Project in the last Semester H) to learn on the job shall give you a definite advantage over a person who has obtained only his certificate of competency. This advantage shall be apparent both at sea and ashore. In addition, all this is being done while you are regularly serving at sea or when on leave. On completion you will be eligible to join any programme where the minimum qualification is a graduation (E.g. MBA, IAS etc.).

2 Do I need to have any particular skills for learning by distance learning?

Learning is a process, which happens all the time. In distance learning the important aspect is that the student accepts the programme he desires to study and is therefore self-motivated to learn. The ability to plan your studies and to work within such plan would be most useful. Ability to ask your seniors or discuss what you are studying amongst your colleagues without embarrassment is another asset.

3 Are there any distinct advantages in studying by distance learning mode?

The major advantage is that you can continue your studies while you are working. Distance learning also provides opportunity to learn in your working environment thereby increasing the value of what you are learning.

Distance learning serves on the job training the best. Company based training programmes can, therefore, be addressed through distance learning. Such training shall then be available to larger groups as a viable option.

The pedagogy of distance learning is also addressed as distance education. The reason why it does not use "teaching" is because in this process, the stress is on learning by the student and not teaching by the teacher.
