Accreditations

TMI and its courses are approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), which is responsible for maritime administration and for overseeing maritime education and training in India. This continuing approval confirms that the Institute and its programmes conform to the Indian flag state's training requirements which in turn embody the requirements of the International Maritime Organisation's standards for training of maritime officers (STCW 95), the globally recognised benchmark for training of seafarers.

TMI degree programmes are conducted in collaboration with the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani. The curricula and conduct of these programmes meets BITS' rigorous academic standards for content delivery and appraisal. On successful completion of these programs, TMI students receive degrees awarded by BITS.

TMI degree programmes are approved by the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore. TMI graduates may, if they so desire, appear for Deck Officer Certificate of Competency / MEO Class 5 Certificate of Competency, after completing a two week course at Singapore.

TMI has a well defined Quality Management System (QMS) of policies and procedures that are designed to meet the requirements of DGS, IMO and BITS. This Quality Assurance System ensures excellence in all facets of TMI's operations and provides a framework for continuous improvement. The TMI Quality Management System has been certified by the Indian Register Quality Systems (IRQS) to meet the exacting requirements of ISO 9001:2000, another global standard.

TMI is also a member of Global Maritime Education and Training Association and regularly contributes towards the development of its programmes and activities.

Crisil has assigned ‘Grade 1’ to the degree courses offered by TMI. This highest grading indicates that the quality of education imparted by the graded courses at the Institute with respect to the course objectives as stated by DGS is outstanding.
