As reported by Ms Cressida Cabral [S.Y.B.A.F.], Director of Rotaract Club
The Shanti Bethel Orphanagewas established in 2002 by Mr. Rajendran and his family. It started out as a feeding program for orphan children back in year 2000. In 2002 they rented a house for an orphanage and registered the voluntary organization as ‘Shanti Bethel’. Today 26 children between 2 and 17 live in the orphanage together with Mr.Rajendran his wife Mrs. Saloma and their two sons. At Shanti the children get good care, love, food, education, shelter, medical care, vocational training and save a small fund for their future. The Shanti Bethel Orphanage is a Christian charity. Since 2004 individuals from the Faroe Islands have followed and supported the work at Shanti Bethel. At that time the children were small and they had recently rented the house for the orphanage. With financial support from individuals, churches and businesses the facilities at the orphanage have improved a lot over the last 10 years. And in 2011 it was possible for the Shanti trust to buy the house which they had rented for 9 years.
In India the Shanti Orphanage is registered as a voluntary organization and a tax-exempted, accountable Christian Trust. And in 2011 a non-profit trust was founded in the Faroe Islands with the purpose to support the work at the Shanti Bethel Orphanage in India.
The members of Rotaract Club of Tolani College had planned this event long time before so that it could be successful. All the members strived hard to collect funds so that we could donate some amount to the orphanage as a token of appreciation and care. We collected funds from each class in the college. The students contributed some amount and students even contributed to this noble cause by donating some new toys, clothes, stationary, games, books, etc. We collected a lot of gifts for the children. Many students also bought biscuits and chocolates to donate.
Shanti Ashram is located in the outskirts of panvel, around 2 hours drive from Andheri. The members of the Rotaract Club of Tolani College of Commerce and Prof. Mubeen shaikh had organised for a bus. All the students along with Prof. Mubeen shaikh left around 8:00am from college and reached Panvel by 10.00 am. As we reached there, we started unloading all the gifts from the bus. Then we proceeded towards the ashram. As we entered all the children looked so happy and they were feeling so shy but then they got along with us.
We were all having a lot of fun with all the kids. We played so many games with them and then played music and danced on their favourite songs. All the kids were so happy; we spoke to them about their hobbies and what they liked doing in their free time d and what movies they liked to watch. We distributed chocolates to all the kids. And then we donated the amount of money we had collected. Prof. Mubeen shaikh along with the students handed over the money to Mr. Rajendra. Later we were talking to the kids and the few of then sang songs for us.
